What to Know Before Buying a Hot Tub Cover

Buying a new hot tub cover can be a pricey, but the savings that come with it are well worth the price. Many hot tub owners look forward to relieving stress and ailments against the pulsating jets of a warm relaxing hot tub, and having to replace a hot tub cover is the last thing you want to think about. Unfortunately, the hot tub cover takes the biggest strain in protecting your hot tub from the elements and usually has to be replaced every three to five years in the Northern areas and three to seven years in the Southern areas.

A replacement hot tub spa cover is a great way to protect your hot tub from debris and harsh weather conditions. Not only will a hot tub cover protect your hot tub from damages but it will save you money on your energy bill. Spa covers are well insulated and prevent heat from escaping your hot tub when not in use. You are now probably asking, what I should look for when buying a hot tub cover?

Here are important things to know before you purchase a replacement spa cover for your hot tub:

When to Buy a New Hot Tub Cover

It should be easy to determine when you need to buy a new hot tub cover.  Inspect your cover and look for any rips or tears to the vinyl. Check the underside and look for deterioration from mold build up and unbalanced chemicals. A spa cover that is heavy and waterlogged is a clear sign that the foam cores are saturated and a replacement cover in needed. If it is a struggle to remove the hot tub cover or more then one person is required to remove the hot tub spa cover, you probably need a new hot tub cover.

Price

As we just discussed, buying a hot tub cover is a necessary investment. You can get a quality hot tub cover for around $300-$400. This may be a pricey investment for some but one that will pay for itself in the long run. The price will vary depending on the size and thickness of the cover.  Any covers that are under this price range will most likely lack in quality and effectiveness.

Vinyl

When choosing a spa cover, make sure that it’s made of high quality vinyl. A quality vinyl will be more resistant to UV damage, fading and discoloration from intense sun. It will also contain mildew inhibitors to help prevent mold build up that cause deterioration and bad odors.

Thickness

A cover that is too thin will prove to be ineffective during harsh weather conditions. The thickness of a quality spa cover usually ranges from 4-6 inches. It is recommended to have a thicker spa cover if you live in a Northern Climate. The thicker a spa cover is the more insulation it will provide, keeping heat from escaping, lowering energy costs in the process. Not only does the thickness help in insulating but it also allows for greater snow loads so the more snow you have in your area the thicker the hot tub cover you will want to invest in. For heavy snow loads it is recommended that customers order our Extreme Hot Tub Cover that is 6″ thick to carry most snow loads and insulate in the lowest temperatures. A great choice for most customers is The Cover Guy Deluxe Hot Tub Cover which is great in all weather conditions including snow and heavy rain. The Deluxe is a 5″ thick spa cover that tapers to 3 inches giving you an ample slope for moisture runoff. And lastly for the southern or moderate climate The Cover Guy takes care of your hot tub cover needs with the Standard 4″ thick spa cover.

Color

You will want to choose the right color for your spa cover depending on where your hot tub is located. It is always a great idea to choose a color that compliments the surrounding area of your hot tub. There are plenty of colors to choose from that will ensure your spa cover blends well with any setting.

Colors that are available: Light Gray, Charcoal, Black, Light Blue, Navy, Teal, Hunter Green, Burgundy, Tan, Brown and Walnut.

Locking Straps

You will want to have locking straps on your spa cover.  Locking straps on a spa cover will keep it from blowing off your hot tub during heavy winds. They are a good safety feature for keeping small children from getting inside your hot tub. They will also keep backyard animals from getting into your hot tub.

Measuring The Hot Tub Cover

If you are a customer of The Cover Guy we will have your dimensions on file so you can just go ahead and order your spa cover leaving the dimension entries blank, and we will take care of the rest. Also, if you are a new customer to The Cover Guy and know your Make and Model we will most likely have your dimensions on file as well and you may leave the dimension fields blank when making your spa cover order. If you do not have the above information or are ordering your hot tub cover somewhere else before you replace an old cover it is important that you measure  your current covers dimensions. Measuring a cover is easy all that is needed is a carpenters square and measuring tape. Makes sure to measure the length, width and radius of the cover as well as the skirt.
